Sophie Gunderson (nee' Knudtson) January 16, 1925 - May 16, 2017
Sophie was the middle child of eleven children, forming close loving relationships with her siblings that sustained the family through the years and was the source of much joy and laughter throughout her life. She and sisters, Helen and Raggie, enjoyed singing as a sister act during WWII and she passed on her love of music to her children.
Sophie was happily married for 58 years to her husband who preceded her in death eleven years ago. She met John Warren Gunderson growing up on neighboring farms in North Dakota and married after Warren's return from WWII service, settling in the Auburn valley. She was a talented seamstress, sewing clothes, beautiful quilts, Quillows, and Raggedy Ann dolls for her children and grandchildren. She also delighted in making and then teaching her children to make Norwegian specialties like lefse, sandbakkels, Berlinerkranser, and krumkake. Family was all important to Sophie and she thrived on nurturing her growing family.
Sophie lived a long wonderful life and left us with many joyful memories of our time with her. She will be missed greatly by her loving family; Her surviving sisters Helen Gallion, and Sylvia (Bud) Jankanish, her children: Lucy (Mike) Carpenter, Gene (Vicki) Gunderson, Sheri Kenward, Sandi Hettich, John (Nancy) Gunderson, her ten grandchildren: Aaron, Heather, Troy, Cory, Cornelia, Shannon, Kelly, Chrissy, Maddy, and Sonja, her nine great-grandchildren: Michael, Edward, Tavae, Anastasia, Isabella, Magnus, Bentley, Andy and Riley and her two great-great-grandchildren: Aliyah and Michael Jr. and also her beloved nieces and nephews.
Sophie was an active lifelong member of the Messiah Lutheran church. She served on the Church Council, participated in the MLCW, and helped to run the Sunday school program for several years. She sewed a great many quilts with the Lutheran Women's quilting circle sending comfort and warmth around the world with the Lutheran World Relief. She and Warren worked together over the years to help the church minister to its members through preparations for weddings and memorials. Her faith was strong and rewarded her with the love of the church family.
